From 1st September, prices across the MXW collection will increase. Here is what has changed—and what will remain exactly the same.
MXW began with a belief that the jewellery you reach for each morning should carry meaning. An initial. A birthstone. A colour you keep returning to. Something small enough to live in, and personal enough to matter.
Meant to be yours. Worn every day. That has never been just a slogan—it is the standard we build to, and the reason this note exists at all.
A necklace is not just beads and an initial. Many of the components that determine its quality are barely visible in a photograph: the crimp that maintains the tension, the guardian that protects the wire where it turns, and the fine French wire shielding the join.
These small details help determine whether a necklace continues to be worn for years or ends up broken in a drawer. They are also some of the easiest places to reduce costs—which is why we refuse to compromise on them.
Gold filled is made by mechanically bonding a substantial layer of genuine gold to a supporting metal. It contains considerably more gold than ordinary gold plating and is designed to maintain its finish through regular wear when cared for properly.
We use 14K gold-filled components wherever they perform an important function, including our spacer beads, clasps and selected findings. Our sterling-silver pieces use genuine 925 sterling silver components on the same principle.
When a design includes a component made using a different process, such as a PVD-coated bubble initial, we identify that material clearly on the individual product page.
Gemstones bearing the same name can vary enormously in colour, clarity, cut and finish. Lower-priced alternatives can also include glass, reconstructed material or heavily treated stones that appear similar in a photograph.
MXW uses natural gemstones selected for their individual colour, character and finish. Because natural stones vary from one batch to the next, every batch is inspected by hand. Stones that do not meet our standard are set aside rather than used in a piece carrying your initial.
Precious-metal prices have moved significantly over the past year. Measured in Australian dollars, gold is currently around 11% higher than it was a year ago, while silver is approximately 45% higher. Both metals have experienced considerable volatility, including substantially higher peaks during that period.
These movements matter directly to MXW. Our gold-filled beads and findings contain a substantial layer of genuine gold, while our sterling-silver components are made from genuine 925 silver. Increases in precious-metal prices therefore contribute directly to the amount we pay when replenishing these components.
The cost of our natural gemstones, specialist findings, supplier freight and local delivery has also increased. Every necklace is individually assembled, finished and quality-checked in Melbourne, and the labour required to do that properly remains an essential part of every piece.
We have absorbed these additional costs for as long as we reasonably could. From 1 September, our prices will be adjusted so that we can continue using the same materials and making every MXW piece to the same standard.
“We could change what we make our jewellery from, or we could change the price. We were not willing to do the first.”
Natural gemstones, genuine pearls and carefully selected gold-filled or sterling-silver components.
Every piece will continue to be hand-finished and quality-checked in our Melbourne studio. Personalised pieces will still be made individually.
Every order will continue to be checked by hand before dispatch, with Australian customer service and our 12-month workmanship warranty.
Writing this was not comfortable. Many of you have supported MXW since the beginning, and I would rather explain this change openly than allow you to discover a different price without context.
What I can promise is that this increase protects the things that make an MXW piece what it is: real stones, genuine gold-filled components, careful workmanship and the time required to finish every necklace properly.
Thank you for choosing our jewellery and for supporting a small Melbourne business.
