Gold filled jewellery has a thick layer of real gold — at least 5% of the piece's total weight — mechanically bonded to a brass core, so it looks and wears like solid gold for 10–30 years at a fraction of the price. Standard gold plating is a far thinner coating that typically wears through within months to a few years, depending on quality. Solid gold lasts forever but costs the most, while 18K gold PVD on stainless steel is a durable, water-resistant middle ground. For everyday jewellery you actually want to wear, gold filled offers the best balance of real gold content, longevity, and price.

Despite the name, gold filled jewellery isn't “filled” with gold — it is wrapped in it. A thick sheet of real gold, usually 14K, is bonded to a jeweller's brass core using heat and pressure. Under the US industry standard, that gold layer must make up at least 5% or 1/20 of the item's total weight, which is why you may see gold filled pieces stamped “14/20 GF”.
That bonded layer is substantially thicker than standard gold plating. It is the reason gold filled jewellery:
With reasonable care, quality gold filled pieces can last for many years. This is why we use gold filled components across many of our beaded and gemstone designs.
Gold filled material cannot be melted and cast into complex shapes. Casting would destroy the bonded gold layer, so gold filled jewellery is generally made from pre-bonded sheet, wire, and tubing that is cut, formed, and soldered.
This has two practical consequences:
Gold plated jewellery begins with a base metal, usually brass, copper, or steel. An electrical process deposits a thin layer of gold onto its surface.
Quality varies considerably. Thicker plating over a suitable base metal can remain attractive for several years, while inexpensive fast-fashion plating may wear within months. Because the gold layer is thin, friction, perspiration, perfume, lotion, and regular handling gradually wear it away.
Once the coating wears through, a brass or copper base may darken, become patchy, or leave a temporary green mark on some people's skin. Gold plated jewellery can still be a sensible choice for occasional-wear or trend-led designs, but it should not be expected to perform like solid gold or gold filled jewellery.
PVD means Physical Vapour Deposition. It is technically a coating, but it is applied differently from standard electroplating. Material is vaporised in a vacuum chamber and bonded to stainless steel, creating a hard and durable surface finish.
Because the underlying material is stainless steel rather than copper or brass, it is resistant to corrosion and unlikely to produce green marks. PVD pieces are generally water resistant and can retain their colour for years, depending on the coating quality and wear conditions.
This is why we use 18K gold PVD stainless steel for selected everyday MXW designs. The trade-off is that PVD contains much less gold than gold filled material, and the coating cannot be polished indefinitely in the same way as solid metal.
Solid gold jewellery uses the same gold alloy throughout the entire piece. A 14K gold alloy contains approximately 58.5% pure gold, while 18K contains 75% pure gold. Unlike plating, its gold surface cannot simply wear through to expose an unrelated base metal.
Solid gold can be polished, repaired, resized where the design allows, and passed down for generations. Its primary disadvantage is price. For engagement rings, heirloom jewellery, or pieces intended to last for decades, solid gold can justify the investment. For everyday necklaces, earrings, and meaningful gifts, gold filled jewellery often delivers a better balance between durability and price.
Choose gold filled if you want the appearance and feel of real gold for regular wear without paying solid-gold prices. It is especially suitable for meaningful gifts and frequently worn necklaces or earrings.
Choose 18K gold PVD stainless steel if you want a durable, water-resistant everyday piece at a more accessible price.
Choose solid gold if you are purchasing a forever piece, an engagement ring, a milestone gift, or jewellery intended to be passed down.
Choose standard gold plated jewellery if you want an inexpensive trend piece or something for occasional wear and accept that the finish may eventually need replacing.

Yes. Gold filled jewellery has an outer layer of genuine gold mechanically bonded to a base-metal core. The gold layer must represent a specified proportion of the item's weight to qualify as gold filled under applicable US standards.
Gold filled jewellery is highly resistant to tarnishing, but no jewellery is completely immune to dirt, chemicals, perspiration, or environmental exposure. Mild surface dulling can usually be removed with a soft jewellery cloth.
Occasional contact with clean water should not immediately damage quality gold filled jewellery. However, removing it before showering will reduce soap residue and extend its lifespan. Always avoid chlorinated pools, salt water, and water exposure for jewellery containing pearls or delicate gemstones.
It is uncommon because the skin contacts the bonded gold surface rather than the brass core. Individual skin chemistry, chemical exposure, and damage to the jewellery can still affect how a piece behaves.
For jewellery that will be worn regularly, usually yes. Gold filled pieces cost more initially but generally last substantially longer than standard plated jewellery, making them better value over repeated wear.
PVD finishes on stainless steel are generally harder and more water resistant than basic electroplating on brass. However, performance depends on coating quality, thickness, wear conditions, and manufacturing standards. Gold filled jewellery still contains substantially more gold than either finish.
Look for markings such as “14/20 GF”, “1/20 14K GF”, or “14K GF”, although very small components may not be stamped. Buy from a seller who clearly discloses the material and be cautious of inexpensive, heavily sculpted cast pieces described as gold filled.
