Treated vs dyed: they're not the same thing

"Treated" is a broad word covering everything humans do to a stone after it comes out of the ground. Some treatments are ancient, stable, and completely accepted within the trade. Others are cosmetic shortcuts that change what you're actually buying.

The line that matters isn't natural versus treated. It's disclosed versus undisclosed. A dyed agate sold honestly as dyed agate is a perfectly reasonable, affordable product. The same bead sold as "natural blue agate" at a premium is something else.

The disclosure gap in the bead supply chain

Gemstone beads pass through several hands before they reach a jewellery maker: mine, cutting factory, treatment facility, wholesaler, then retailer. Every step adds distance between the stone and the truth about it.

By the time beads reach an online wholesale listing, they're often described only by colour and size — "8mm blue turquoise beads, 15 inch strand" — with no mention of dye, stabilisation, or whether it's turquoise at all. Small makers buying in good faith then pass that description straight to their customers, and nobody in the chain has technically lied. The information simply evaporated somewhere upstream.

We work around this by buying from a small number of large, established suppliers in the United States and China — the kind who have been trading stone for decades, hold consistent stock, and can answer a direct question about their material. And we ask the same direct question every single time we order: is this dyed, yes or no?

A useful rule when shopping anywhere: if a listing describes only colour and size, and never uses the word "dyed", "colour enhanced", "stabilised" or "natural colour" anywhere, ask before you buy. Sellers who source undyed stone will tell you readily, because it's the harder and more expensive thing to do.

Why we say "not dyed" instead of "no treatment"

You'll notice we never describe our stones as untreated. That's deliberate, and it's worth explaining, because plenty of sellers do make that claim.

The trouble is that "treatment" has no clean boundary once you look at how beads are actually made. Every bead has been cut and polished — that's a mechanical treatment. Most beads are tumbled with wax or oil at the end of production to bring up the shine and smooth the feel; it's so routine in bead factories that it's almost never mentioned on a spec sheet. Some stones are heated, a practice older than modern jewellery itself. Strictly speaking, a genuinely untouched gemstone bead barely exists.

So a supplier saying "no treatment" usually means "no dye, no fracture filling, nothing unusual" — not that the stone came out of the earth looking like that. We'd rather not repeat a phrase that sounds absolute and isn't. Instead we hold ourselves to the one distinction that actually changes what you own:

  • Is the colour the stone's own, or was it added? That's the question we confirm with our suppliers on every order, and the one we answer for you.
  • Where a stone is dyed — some styles simply don't exist in nature at an accessible price — we say so plainly rather than letting the colour speak for itself.
  • We don't claim "100% untreated", because we can't verify every step a stone took before it reached our supplier, and we'd rather under-claim than mislead.

It's a narrower promise than some sellers make. It's also one we can actually keep.

Why we avoid dyed beads

1. Nobody will tell you what's actually in the dye

This is our main concern, and it gets discussed far less than fading does.

When a strand is dyed, the colourant is an industrial formula chosen for cost and vividness — and it's almost never identified. Not on the wholesale listing, not on the packaging, not on the retail product page. The stone might be named; the chemistry sitting on its surface never is.

Inexpensive imported jewellery has a long, documented history of containing substances nobody would choose to wear, and cheap colourants and fixatives are one of the routes they get there. Residual dye and the chemicals used to set it sit directly against skin all day, on a bracelet that's warm and slightly damp from wear. Some people develop irritation or contact dermatitis under dyed beads; most people never notice anything at all. The honest position is that we can't tell you it's harmful, because we can't tell you what it is — and that's exactly the problem.

Undyed stone removes the question entirely. The colour is mineral, it's been there for millions of years, and there's no formula to disclose.

2. The colour doesn't hold

Dye penetrates unevenly — deepest in the stone's natural fractures, shallowest across dense areas. Over months of wear, sunlight, sunscreen, perfume, and skin oils work on that colour. Beads go patchy, edges pale, and the drill holes start showing a lighter shade than the surface. A stone that took millions of years to form shouldn't have a shelf life.

3. It can mark skin and fabric

Poorly fixed dye can lift with sweat, especially on bracelets in Australian summer heat. It's uncommon with better-quality dyeing, but when it happens it shows up as tinted skin under the beads or faint marks on light-coloured sleeves and collars — and it's a visible sign that the colourant isn't staying where it was put.

4. You may not be buying the stone you think

Dye is most often used to make a cheap mineral impersonate an expensive one. The substitutions below are so common in the bead trade that experienced buyers assume them until told otherwise.

5. It undermines the point of the gift

A dyed substitute quietly hollows that out, and the recipient usually finds out eventually, which is the worst possible moment for it to surface.

How to spot dyed gemstone beads

  1. Look into the drill hole. The most reliable check on a bead. Dye concentrates at the surface, so a paler interior visible at the drill hole means colour was added.
  2. Check the cracks. Natural colour follows the stone's internal structure. Dye pools in fractures, leaving darker lines and blotches that trace every tiny crack.
  3. Question perfect uniformity. Real stone varies bead to bead in tone, banding, and inclusion. Forty identical beads in an identical vivid shade is a manufacturing outcome, not a geological one.
  4. Consider the colour itself. Neon blue, hot pink, electric green and jet-black-with-glitter almost never occur naturally in inexpensive stone.
  5. Trust the price. A strand of genuine turquoise, lapis or jade costs many times what the dyed lookalike does. A bargain that seems impossible usually is.
  6. The cotton bud test. A cotton bud lightly dampened with acetone (nail polish remover), rubbed on an inconspicuous spot, will sometimes pick up colour from a dyed bead. Test one bead only, and never try this on pearls, opal, amber, turquoise or any porous or organic material — acetone can damage them permanently.

How to care for natural gemstone beads

Untreated stone still deserves looking after. Keep beads away from perfume, hairspray and sunscreen by putting jewellery on last; remove pieces before showering, swimming and exercising; store them out of direct sunlight, since prolonged sun can pale even natural colour in stones like amethyst and rose quartz; and wipe with a soft dry cloth after wear.
